What do I need to know about flu in Nashville?
Since COVID-19, flu season has been shorter and less severe than before COVID. Now in February 2025 we have seen a shift back to rising flu cases.
We typically see two main types of influenza viruses: type A and type B. These viruses are responsible for our annual flu season. This year the Tennessee Department of Health shows that the most prominent strain of the flu is H1N1 & H3, a type A flu virus. The virus reached it’s peak in early February where some Tennessee counties shut down schools due to outbreaks. According to the TN Government’s Flu View, Middle Tennessee specifically, Davidson County, has been in the “very high” category for outbreaks for the beginning weeks of the New Year, through February.
As a reminder, if you are feeling any of the following symptoms make sure to get tested:
- Fever/chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny/stuffy nose
- Body aches
- Fatigue
- Vomiting/diarrhea (more common in children)
COVID-19 and RSV in Nashville
COVID-19 previously has taken over flu seasons and we used to see more increased cases in the winter months. Although COVID is still circulating as a virus through our communities, we have seen a drop in cases during this Winter flu season. We encourage patients who are experiencing symptoms of flu or COVID to be tested for both illnesses to ensure proper treatment.
Another Illness to look out for is Respiratory Syncytial Virus(RSV). RSV is a common virus that affects the lungs and respiratory tract, often causing cold-like symptoms. It can be especially serious for infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include a runny nose, cough, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. In more severe cases, RSV can lead to difficulty breathing or dehydration. If you or your child experience trouble breathing, high fever, or symptoms that worsen over time, it’s important to seek medical care.
