When to ask your Primary Care Provider about your Thyroid

What is the thyroid gland?

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that produces hormones that play a key role in regulating blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, metabolism, and the reaction of the body to other hormones. The thyroid produces two hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The basic function of your thyroid is to regulate your metabolism so your body can properly convert food into energy. The gland can experience different issues involving overactive(hyperthyroidism) or underactive(hypothyroidism) thyroid. The improper production of hormones can cause varying symptoms. Your primary care provider will play a key role in testing and regulating any thyroid issues.

When should I get my Thyroid checked?

Getting your thyroid hormone levels checked with your primary care provider is a good idea if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms.

  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Slow or fast heart rate
  • Intolerance to cold or heat
  • Dry or moist skin
  • Irregular menstrual cycle

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, asking to test your thyroid is a good start to seeing if it is over or under producing the necessary hormones.

How do they test my thyroid levels?

Your primary care provider will order a blood test in order to check your T3 and T4 levels. This test can be taken without fasting at any time of day and will check to see if there are any irregularities in your hormone levels such as high or low T4 levels. If you are experiencing a thyroid issue, your primary care provider can help you regulate your hormone levels through medication.
