Sprain, Strain, or Fracture? When to Head to Urgent Care

Sprains, strains, and fractures are some of the most common injuries we see in out walk in clinics — and while they may sound similar, each requires a unique approach to care and recovery. Whether it’s a twisted ankle on the soccer field, a pulled muscle during a workout, or a broken bone from a fall, getting the right diagnosis and treatment early can make all the difference in your healing time.

At Complete Health Partners, our Nashville & Hendersonville Walk In Clinics, are here to help you get back to doing what you love—pain-free and as fast as possible.

Sprain, Strain, or Fracture: What’s the Difference?

Before you treat an injury, it helps to know what you’re dealing with:

  • Sprain: A stretch or tear of a ligament (the tissue connecting bones). Common in ankles, knees, and wrists.
  • Strain: A stretch or tear of a muscle or tendon (the tissue connecting muscles to bones). Often occurs in the back or hamstrings.
  • Fracture: A broken bone, ranging from hairline cracks to full breaks.

What to Do Immediately After an Injury

If you have a sudden injury during activity, follow the R.I.C.E. method:

  • R – Rest: Avoid using the injured area.
  • I – Ice: Apply ice for 15-20 minutes every few hours to reduce swelling.
  • C – Compression: Wrap the area with an elastic bandage to help control swelling.
  • E – Elevation: Keep the injured area elevated above heart level if possible.

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also help reduce pain and swelling in the short term.

When to Head to Our Walk In Clinics

While some injuries heal with rest and care at home, others need professional evaluation. Visit a walk in clinic if you notice:

  • Pain that doesn’t improve within a few days
  • Swelling or bruising that worsens
  • Inability to bear weight or move the area normally
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness

At Complete Health Partners, we offer on-site X-rays to evaluate for fractures, casting/splinting, and provide a full treatment plan to get you healing quickly and safely.
